Experimental characterization of deformation on large area flexible substrates

At TNO, Patterning for Flexible Systems

Internship description:

To make robust displays, OLEDs or solarcells, the rigid substrate materials like glass and silicon wafers will be switched to plastic substrates, like PEN or PET foils. The challenge of making electronics on flexible substrates is the flexible nature of the substrates. Foils tend to deform under all kind of changing process conditions (material deposition, moisture and temperature) and handling. Therefore, it is hard to control the in-plane and flatness tolerances required for processing. The patterning technology targets for micron-sized features but the trend towards sub-micron sized features is foreseen. The flexibility of the foil causes deformations in the foil so the dimensions of the patterns are hard to control. To be able to produces smaller and more accurate patterns, the characterization of the deformation of the large area flexible substrates is important.

Your tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Literature research to provide you with the required theoretical background about lithography and dimensional stability of polymer substrates

  • P erform experiments in laboratory and clean room (substrate preparation, exposure, development)

  • Measure deformation of the substrates.

  • Fine tune process parameters (lamination techniques, measurement techniques)

  • Participate in group meetings, provide feed-back, discuss results, and propose solutions to various challenging aspects

  • write experimental reports

Profile:
You are an ambitious master student with both scientific and practical skills. You have a mechanical engineering, or applied science background. You have good communication skills in English and you are independent but also a team player.
